American Legion Post 139
What is the American Legion?
Nationally, each year, the American Legion Department Service Officers help thousands of veterans receive VA benefits they earned through service to their country. The Legion conducts, promotes, and supports hundreds of career fairs for veterans and transitioning service members, bringing employers face-to-face with job hunters. Through Operation Comfort Warriors, the Legion raises funds to provide comfort items for U.S. troops recovering in military hospitals and transition units worldwide. Legion staff lobbies Congress for better quality of life for U.S. military personnel.
Nearly 100,000 young men experience teamwork and competition yearly through American Legion Baseball. The Legion provides over $138,000 in scholarships through The National American Legion High School Oratorical Contest. And Legion Riders, through the annual Legacy Run, have raised more than $2 million for the Legacy Scholarship, helping ensure the children of U.S. servicemembers killed on or after Sept. 11, 2001, have a chance at a college education.
Membership
The American Legion membership is decreasing. As older veterans pass on, we need younger members to step into their shoes. Washington is always looking for ways to cut veteran benefits, and the American Legion is here to help prevent that. We need everyone to help us keep our numbers strong so the politicians will know we are watching. Whether you want to be actively involved in our efforts or simply add your voice to the cause in Washington, you're welcome here.
For more information, please click to download an e-brochure, “Why You Should Belong.” Stop by the post during office hours to discuss what we do. Or come visit us at a monthly meeting. Together, we can make a difference in our communities and protect the benefits our servicemembers were promised and deserve.
